THE JOINT

Burger City is a local burger joint that you can find a little off the freeway in the Northern California city of Vacaville. Their sign outside said they had been voted best burger in Vacaville from 2006 – 2010.

My car was in the shop at a dealership in Vacaville, and during one of my visits to check on the laundry list of work being done of the vehicle, I decide to check for any good burger places in town. I did a quick Google search for burger vacaville and the one non-chain burger that came up was Burger City.  After reading a few decent reviews on Yelp, I figured it was worth a shot.

THE BURGER

I ordered the Colossal Bacon Double Cheeseburger and figured I’d make it truly colossal by adding bacon to the mix. The burgers at Burger City are made with fresh ground 100% USDA Choice 1/3 pound beef patties and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. The colossal is made colossal by doubling the meat, doubling the cheese and serving it up with the works.

I have to say, this burger made a great first impression. I love a burger that is stacked high and ready for action and this burger was loaded with bacon and dripping with an epic amount of melted cheese with a profile that would make Alfred Hitchcock’s sideview blush. Unfortunately, I didn’t take the time to fully read the menu to see that they cook all of their burgers Medium Well unless you ask otherwise.  So my first bite was super bacony and sufficiently cheesy, but not overly juicy. The hamburger actually seemed more well done than medium well, but that’s my bad for not remembering to specify how I wanted my burger cooked.

Even though the burger was cooked more than I would’ve liked, it did have a nice char flavor that went well with the heaps of bacon. The red onions, tomatoes and lettuce helped to moisten the sandwich, but did little to enhance the overall flavor.  Although the patties are said to be 1/3 pound, when I compare them to the 1/3 pound patties at Nationwide Freezer Meats in Sacramento, they seemed a bit smaller than advertised.

The true winner of the meal were the beer battered french fries. I think you have a choice of a few different fry options there, but take my word for it…go with the beer battered fries.  Easily, without a doubt, in the top 5 french fries I’ve ever tried in my entire life.  The crisp outside and the chewy inside are givens, but I didn’t expect to enjoy the actual texture of the fries and the extra flavor boost that dipped them in beer batter before frying would give them.  I’d drive to Vacaville just to get the french fries…they were that good.

THE VERDICT

Burger City serves up a good burger with potential to be a great burger if cooked medium instead of well done.  I’d definitely be willing to give them another shot with one of their other cheeseburgers featured on their menu. They had a Chipotle Burger and a Western Bacon Cheeseburger that both sounded tempting.  They get extra B factor points for serving up a very “pretty” burger :) I really like how the Colossal photo turned out.  There don’t seem to be too many non-chain places to get a burger in Vacaville, so this place is worth a visit if you’re in the area.
